Step 4. Set Up Department Names and ID Fields (Optional)

What is a Department Name / ID Field?

Department Names are the names of any departments, branches, or offices your company might have. If you don't have any departments in your company, Powerpay will assign all your employees to ID Dept #100 - Default.

ID fields can also be set up to identify other employee categories (e.g. job function, union classification, division, or full time vs. part time).

Why do I have to do this?

The department number and name, when assigned to an employee, is used by Powerpay to allocate the employee's earnings and company contributions to that department for costing purposes.

When you receive your Payroll Distribution Summary and Journal Entry from Ceridian, you will see the salaries and wages as well as any employer contributions charged to these departments.

Later in this module we will discuss the option to sort your Employee List by department using the Sort/Filter screen... Employee names under headings of 001-Kitchen and 002-Yard. ...you may also have the department number print on your employees' pay stubs to make them easier to distribute.

If you'd like, the department number or any of the ID fields can be used to create an extended journal entry, or sort pay stuabs and the payroll register. Just talk to Ceridian's Customer Care about setting that up.
